KDF’s Digital Frontier: How AI and Data Science are Transforming Kenya’s Military Strategy

The Vice Chief of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) John M. Omenda officiated the closing ceremony of the inaugural Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Course at the Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS), concluding a two-week intensive programme that ran from 17th to 28th November 2025.

The course brought together 25 Senior Officers and Officers from various Kenya Defence Forces Formations and Units, which provided technical support and capacity building expertise. Facilitated by the Netherlands Department of Data Science Centre of Excellence the participants underwent intensive training in machine learning, big-data analytics, predictive modelling, automation tools, and AI-driven intelligence analysis including practical simulations that mirrored real world peace support and humanitarian scenarios, among others.

In his remarks, Lt. Gen. Omenda commended the partnership for pioneering the programme, emphasizing that data analytics and artificial intelligence are vital tools for enhancing operational planning, decision-making, and mission effectiveness. He encouraged the participants to apply their newly acquired skills to strengthen digital readiness across the Kenya Defence Forces.

On the same platform, Deputy Ambassador Joca Beerends highlighted the importance of international collaboration and partnerships, as well as the critical role of artificial intelligence in enhancing Defence and security capabilities. He commended the Kenya Defence Forces for embracing advanced technologies to improve operational efficiency and mission readiness.

The ceremony concluded with the awarding of certificates to the graduating cohort, officially recognizing them as the first officers trained under this advanced programme.
